A shift from agricultural employment to manufacturing accelerated a century before the steam engine & the boom in coal usage: intriguing findings from 20 years of archival research in England & Wales.
If it wasn't the energy... new techniques, in process or organisation? (eg printing?) Hard-working immigrants? Ideas thus spread? Any ideas here re the past, or for our future?

Chart showing the % of the male labour force engaged in agriculture, the secondary sector (manufacturing and processing), & tertiary sector (services), 1381-1901. More data is available after 1600, from probate and then also parish & census records. Earlier data comes from the 1381 poll tax, and 1522 muster list and coroners' reports. The messaging on the carbon tax has been so bad. People just don’t get it. Even thought it’s likely the most market and consumer friendly way to put a price on carbon and reduce usage. mas.to/@robsonfletcher/1122040
